Legendary actress, June Foray, the voice of such renowned cartoon characters as Natasha, Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Witch Hazel and little Cindy Lou Who, will be making a special appearance this evening, January 5th, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena at 8 PM and performing in word and song with Will Ryan and the Cactus County Cowboys. Be there or be square!
Who's got big plans for Halloween? What about costumes? Maybe you'll be inspired by Chuck Jones's 1956 short cartoon, "Broomstick Bunny" starring the vocal stylings of the inimitable June Foray.
"Broomstick Bunny" flew into theaters (on a broom, of course!) on February 25, 1956. The second outing for the Chuck Jones character, Witch Hazel (the first being 1954's "Bewitched Bunny",) and here we find her deathly afraid of becoming beautiful. Bugs, of course, is onto her machinations and utters one of my favorite lines, "Who undoes your hair?" all the while finessing his way around her legerdemain and potions (particularly those beauty ones.)
"Rabbit Recipes" is a Chuck Jones cel art edition created from Jones' original hand-inked line drawing. Each cel is hand-painted on the reverse side by expert cel painters; it has been hand-signed by the artist as well as by June Foray, the voice actor of the character, Witch Hazel.
We have it on good authority that this is one of Bugs Bunny's favorite recipes for carrot cake:
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/4 cups vegetable oil
- 2 cups white sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 3 cups grated carrots
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.
In a large bowl, beat together eggs, oil, white sugar and 2 teaspoons
vanilla. Mix in flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
Stir in carrots. Fold in pecans. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick
inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan
for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
To Make Frosting: In a medium bowl, combine butter, cream cheese,
confectioners' sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until the mixture is
smooth and creamy. Stir in chopped pecans. Frost the cooled cake. Which we found here.
Chuck Jones' Broomstick Bunny swept into theaters on February 25, 1956. Witch Hazel (brought to such wonderful life by the incomparable actress, June Foray) is deathly afraid of becoming beautiful; she even has a 'magic mirror' to which she posits the question, "Who is the ugliest of them all?" Bugs Bunny makes a grand entrance in witch costume trick or treating and much hilarity ensues! All of this resulting in the sudden and completely unexpected transformation of Witch Hazel into a ravishing sex symbol, so potent is her beauty that even the genie in the mirror is smitten as witnessed in this delightful layout drawing by Chuck Jones.
