The Chuck Jones Centennial Celebration Kick-off

San Diego, CA:  The Chuck Jones Gallery, located in the historical center of the city at 232 Fifth Avenue, announced today their schedule of artist appearances and exhibits during International Comic Con, July 12-15.  All events and receptions are free and open to the public.

  • Disney, Warner Bros., and Star Wars artist, Mike Kungl, will be feted with a reception on Thursday, July 12th from 7 to 10 PM.  The official artist for the Miami Beach Art Deco Weekend, Kungl is known for his sleek stylings reminiscent of the time of luxury liners, movie stars, and geometric designs. His work for Warner Bros., Disney, and Star Wars brings a dramatic theatricality to images beloved by collectors world-wide. Kungl has been selected by the family of legendary animation creator and director, Chuck Jones, to create homage artwork for their celebration of Chuck Jones’s centennial year (1912-2012). In addition to the Homage work, he will be unveiling original Super Heroes mixed media paintings. Kungl will be dedicating artwork purchased at the exhibit.

  • On Friday, July 13th, the Gallery will host an open house 7 to 10 PM celebrating the Chuck Jones Centennial.  The Chuck Jones Gallery is pleased to announce that the Smithsonian Institutes Traveling Exhibits will be touring a Chuck Jones retrospective beginning mid-2014. To celebrate that and Chuck’s centennial, the gallery will feature an exhibit of original production art from the Chuck Jones archive chronicling his films made during the Golden Age of Animation (1940s, 1950s). This evening will also be filled with free raffles for artwork, games where the winner will receive a free work of Chuck Jones art, plus trivia competitions that will challenge even the geekiest among you, the winners of which will win a free work of Chuck Jones art. PLUS THIS JUST IN!: MEET ARTIST JAMES C. MULLIGAN AND CHUCK JONES'S GRANDSON, CRAIG KAUSEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE CHUCK JONES CENTER FOR CREATIVITY!!! SEE MULLIGAN'S LATEST CHUCK JONES HOMAGE ORIGINAL ART UNVEILED!
  • The visually-challenged artist, Tennessee Loveless, will be honored with an exhibition and reception on Saturday, July 14th from 2 to 5 PM.  Severely color-blind, Loveless overcame the obvious obstacles on his road to becoming a young tyro. Utilizing a system of mathematical formulas to plot his color charts, his POP/OP paintings vibrate with color as his imagery delights and surprises collectors.  Chosen by the family of Chuck Jones as one of the Centennial Homage artists, Loveless has applied his skill and undeniable talent to the cartoon characters made famous by the four-time Oscar-winning director. Unveiling his first Homage work, “The Big Kaboom”, Loveless will also be signing and dedicating a limited number of commemorative Comic Con 2012 Chuck Jones Gallery posters.
