Chuck Jones Center Welcomes the Girl Scouts!

On Saturday, April 10 from 9 AM to 12:30 PM , Girl Scout Troops 734, 1172 and 1462 from around Orange County descended on the Chuck Jones Center for their first art badge-earning art class.  Led by teaching artist, Chris Scardino,

the girls spent the first part of their morning scouting Old Town Orange's Plaza for the existence of three-dimensional art.  Finding plenty of examples was no problem, with stops at the Plaza's fountain and the Martial Arts Center's windows.

Enjoying the brief history of art around the world, the Brownie group used this opportunity to learn about creating art as a bridge project to becoming cadets.  Once back at the Center's dedicated space (131 W. Chapman,) the girls worked on a variety of art projects including learning to fold origami cranes, led by Cheryl Posner, the Executive Director of the Center.

Another project involved creating inspirational mobiles from found objects:

Other student artists developed new ways of communicating visually by designing and building sculptures from recyclables as others got their hands dirty molding figurines from clay.

All in all, Saturday at the Center inspired all of the participants (adults included!) and everyone left with a feeling of renewed creative energy; feeling hopeful, happy, and at peace.
